Dee Dee Bridgewater – Stefano di Battista

Dee Dee Bridgewater, a three-time Grammy Award winner and Tony Award recipient, stands as one of the greatest performers and singers in modern jazz history. Born Denise Eileen Garrett in 1950 in Memphis, Tennessee, she grew up immersed in blues, jazz, and rhythm and blues. Bridgewater’s career took off with the female vocal trio Les Iridescents in Michigan clubs, leading to performances with the renowned Thad Jones/Mel Louis Big Band in New York. She collaborated with jazz giants like Sonny Rollins, Dizzy Gillespie, and Max Roach, solidifying her place in the jazz world.

Her versatility shone through as she won a Tony Award for her role in the musical “The Wiz” and delivered acclaimed performances in multiple musicals and Off-Broadway/West End productions. In 2006, Bridgewater founded DDB Records with Universal Music Group, producing several Grammy Award-winning albums, including tributes to Ella Fitzgerald. Her influence extends beyond music; she serves as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations, is recognized as a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Jazz Master, champions the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), and has been inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame. Bridgewater’s powerful, deep voice and multifaceted career have cemented her status as one of the greatest jazz vocalists of our time.

Stefano di Battista, an iconic artist rooted in tradition, is an Italian saxophonist who channels his passion into his heritage with the album “La Dolce Vita”. Born in 1969 in Rome, di Battista began playing saxophone at 13, drawing inspiration from Art Pepper and Julian Cannonball Adderley. His jazz journey led him to Paris, where he collaborated with drummer Aldo Romano and bandleader Laurent Cugny, eventually performing as a soloist in the new National Jazz Orchestra.

Di Battista’s career is marked by several albums showcasing his virtuosic neo-hard bop style. In 2021, he paid tribute to Ennio Morricone with the album “Morricone Stories”, and in 2024, he launched a new album focusing on Italian songs, featuring his transalpine group. Known for his melodic interpretations of themes by Paolo Conte, Andrea Bocelli, Lucio Dalla, and compositions by Renato Carosone and Nino Rota, di Battista performs with his high-caliber quartet, recently adding Italian trumpeter Matteo Cutello. His mastery of melody and tone brings a fresh perspective to Italian musical heritage while honoring jazz traditions, making him a standout figure in contemporary jazz.

CORE MEU

In “Core Meu” themes of trance and sacrifice prevail. Masterfully bridging the gap between pointe ballet and the tarantella, the ballet transports us to the edge of the Mediterranean, specifically to the Puglia region of Italy. Accompanied by Antonio Castrignanò and his musicians, the energy emanating from this mass of dancers swirling to the beat of the tamburello drum connects us directly to the origins of dance.
