To the east side of the Old Town, which in French is called ""The Rock"" (Le Rocher), there is a particularly famous secondary school. This is the ""Lycée Albert Premier"" founded in 1910 and following the public education system, it stands out for its prestige and reach at a national level. In reference to its name, it derives from Albert I, who was the monarch of Monaco from 1889 to 1922. The building that houses the school was built in the 17th century (1665-1675) as a nunnery, while during the French Revolution (1889-1899) it became a barracks and then turned into an Italian Jesuit school. After entrance exams to it, students follow a general curriculum that is partially bilingual (French, Italian). The high school provides ideal teaching conditions that lead the students with the best prospects to the high school diploma known as the "Baccalauréat".
