Oceanographic Museum of Monaco – A Journey into the Marine World
Perched dramatically on the cliffs of Monaco, the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco is one of the world’s most prestigious marine science institutions. Founded in 1910 by Prince Albert I, a pioneer in ocean exploration, the museum is a center for marine research, conservation, and education, offering visitors an immersive journey into the wonders of the ocean.
The museum is home to an impressive collection of marine life, including aquariums, interactive exhibits, historical artifacts, and deep-sea exploration tools. Its aquariums house over 6,000 marine species, from vibrant coral reefs to majestic sharks and endangered sea creatures. The Shark Lagoon and Turtle Island are among the museum’s most captivating attractions, providing a close-up look at marine ecosystems and conservation efforts.
Beyond its living exhibits, the museum also features fascinating collections of maritime artifacts, scientific instruments, and Prince Albert I’s pioneering oceanographic expeditions. Visitors can explore interactive displays on marine biology, climate change, and ocean conservation, making the museum a must-visit for families, science enthusiasts, and marine lovers.
With its breathtaking sea views, rooftop terrace, and engaging exhibitions, the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco is not just a museum—it’s a gateway to the mysteries of the ocean.

I had low expectations but this aquarium turned out to be surprisingly fantastic. Try to get there early (especially on weekends) as it gets busy in the aquarium areas. Make sure you see the tank with the teeming schools of small clown fish. In April 2025 there was a fabulous video exhibit that is not to be missed. It lasts about 15 minutes. But make sure you visit the aquarium downstairs first (because it gets busier as day goes on) and then go upstairs to see the rest. End your visit by walking in the free gardens beside the museum. Stunning views of the Med.

The Musée Océanographique in Monaco has potential, with a beautiful building and location. However, I felt the €22.5 entrance fee for adults and 14 euro for children was steep for the current offering. The number of attractions could be expanded, and the aquarium could benefit from more spectacular and engaging displays to hold the attention of both adults and children. My child, unfortunately, was not entertained for long. Having experienced more comprehensive and engaging museums elsewhere, I hope to see improvements in the future.

Pleased to say that you can disregard some of the previous reviews about sections being blocked off! Seems we were very lucky to turn up a couple of weeks after the museum fully reopened upstairs - completely unplanned on our part - but very glad we did. The aquarium itself is excellent, with all sorts of delightful aquatic creatures to watch, but the upstairs displays are extremely well done. One hall has been turned into a 2001-style submarine with a sci-fi cockpit as you enter and view of the deep ocean projection mapped onto all the windows. It really feels like you’re in a cavernous deep-sea exploration vessel. The opposite hall is a very polished exhibition on the history of ocean exploration and conservation by the Monaco royal family. The exhibits are detailed, with multilingual videos and lots of interactive displays for curious children and adults alike. Out plan was to pop into this place then maybe look around Monaco, but we ended up spending several hours here instead! The gift shop is also excellent. Great if you need to buy a full set of very tasteful ocean-themed crockery and glassware, or just a giant shark plushy.

Arrived on Wednesday around midday went in without waiting. Aquarium is located on the -2 floor and it’s really small. It took me around 30 mins to see everything there. I visited aquariums in Tokyo and Osaka and over there it was 2-3 hrs long visit. There was a nice selection of fish species, corals and plants. Lastly, there was a small display of land turtles in the garden which I enjoyed. On the other floors there were some expositions and additional informations regarding see explorations. It was ok, a little too polished and artificial. Building itself seams nice, spacious with impressive wooden beams, yet again not quite big fan of style. Overall, though it was quite disappointing and very limited experience, definitely not worth the €20.50.

Great aquarium and museum - pity that some of the exhibits were under renovation at the time of the visit. However the sea creatures seem to be really healthy and in good condition, and they even have a nautilus. The cliffside location also adds an element of beauty for the view from the museum. There is a restaurant and play area for children at the top floor.

Located at Av. Saint-Martin, 98000 Monaco 🇲🇨. This museum is a fascinating mixture of educational fun, conservation and the views from the rooftop terrace are amazing, it’s a lovely spot to take in the view of Monaco and the coastline and enjoy a drink or something to eat. The displays in the exhibits are very impressive, they are excellently curated and the range of marine life is very diverse. The aquariums seemed to be very well maintained. The building itself is a stunning piece of architecture. It’s gorgeous. The aquarium is open every day from 10.00am until 6.00pm. Ticket prices - Adult (18 years and over) €20.50 Children (4-17 years) €13.00 I think it’s possibly the best venue for an aquarium I have seen. The views cannot be beaten. The Polar exhibit was fascinating. I absolutely loved it. I would absolutely recommend. Thumbs up!!! 👍👍👍

A must-visit in Monaco! The museum combines education, conservation, and stunning views from the rooftop. The exhibits are well-curated, with diverse marine species and engaging displays like the polar exhibition. It wasn’t crowded during my visit, making for a more personal experience. It’s fairly priced compared to similar attractions. The website for tickets was a bit tricky, but buying in person was easy. Highly recommend, whether you're a marine life enthusiast or just exploring Monaco!
